Recently I have been peppered with emails about corporate
businesses going awry with what/who they are supporting.
Although I think it vital to be "Salt & Light" in
a world immersed in darkness, we must consider what battles
to fight, when to engage, and which plain to fight
them on. Moreover, we must remember who the true enemy
is. With that said, I believe it is good to
know how we are all interrelated. Before we segregate
our efforts towards the 1 or 2 organizations who
may not reflect our values, consider these facts: the
vast majority of the brands and companies that you support
likewise support or partner with organizations that
do not necessarily stand for Christian values. In
principle, if you plan on boycotting one you had better
boycott them all and become an Hamish Quaker (in
practice at least). Seriously. Take a
look at the following...
Altria -- you have not heard of them
but they used to be known as (and still are)...
Philip Morris --You
know they make cigarettes...oh they also give funds to
Planned Parenthood (you know the abortion advocates).
They also just happen to own:
Kraft Holdings... who are the recent
sponsors for the 2006 gay Olympics. Oh - Kraft
also owns:
Oscar Meyer - Hot Dogs, Lunch meat,
bacon
Kraft Foods - Macaroni & Cheese,
Miracle Whip
Nabisco Foods - Oreos, Chips Ahoy
etc.
Post Cereals - Grape nuts, Raisin
Bran, etc.
Planter's Peanuts
DiGiorno
Kool-Aid
Jell-O
Miracle Whip
Maxwell House
and about 100 other brands.
So that means
you had better put down that Oreo and look elsewhere.
And if you are going to do that then you had better
get a new O/S because those pesky gay-rights group have
plenty of companies that support them...chief among them
is Microsoft
who now plans to support upcoming gay-rights legislation. But
if you are going to do that then make sure you also abstain
from supporting the following groups as they support
abortion rights: Bank of America, CIGNA, Johnson & Johnson,
J. P. Morgan Chase, Kenneth Cole, Levi Strauss, Pfizer,
Prudential, Walt Disney, Unilever, Wachovia, Whole
Foods, Ernst and Young, Merck, Time Warner, Wells Fargo and
Neiman Marcus. And if you are against that then
you probably want to stop purchasing from companies that
support stem-cell research like GE.
I really could go on and on...but I think you get
the point. Perhaps it is time for Christians to
re-think their approach and strategy on how to advance
the Kingdom of God I mean, we are to make disciples --
that is our great commission. We know that we are
in this world but not of it. So let your light
shine brightly on the hill and let your salt flow with
season. Otherwise, stop choosing your battles ala carte
and be separate -- all the way...Pilgrim. |
