Racial polarization is a reality in our culture. We are
not so integrated as some would suppose. Moreover, we are
also a long way from achieving equality. With that
said, the last thing we need is a television show promoting
and legitimizing social Darwinism vis-à-vis racial
competition.
Heads of state from Mahatma Ghandi to Joseph Stalin sought
his talent. The top business leaders and entrepreneurs of
his day eagerly desired to work with him. Henry Ford offered
him unlimited resources, laboratory facilities and assistants
if he would do research for his company...and finally Edison.
He seemed to be at the top of his game, however George
you see, did not begin life so easy. Growing up he had
to do without and in fact his mother was killed when he was
very young. Thus began a difficult life with many obstacles
to overcome.
As a result of these obstacles, George was unable to attend
school regularly until the age of twelve, but he desperately
wanted to be there to learn as much as he could. He was forced
to leave home and live with another family in order to attend
school and paid for his board by doing the household chores.
He had to forgo recess at school so that he could return
home and help with the laundry, but he invariably had a book
open from which he continued to study during
his chores.
Still he did not let these things daunt him. At an
early age, George decided to make his refuge in the Lord
and every morning he valued his time with the Lord and prayed
earnestly for…wisdom; he learned the way of God and
George decided at an early age that he would not let anyone
or anything deter him from the way of the Lord. As
he grew, he continued to grow in wisdom, and as a young adult
God began to open his mind. While in college he learned
that he had an affinity for botany and thus he began to prosper
in this area. In his quiet times alone with God, the
lord would unveil the curtain of wisdom and show him the
great secrets. George knew to apply this wisdom
for good, and before he had graduated, his reputation as
a bright student, researcher, and inspiring teacher was beginning
to spread. Many universities and colleges were ready to offer
him a position.
George however was not looking for wealth or fame, his focus
being solely on pleasing the lord by doing the most good
he could with what was given him. He knew he would recognize
the right opportunity and when it came he embraced it. Now,
offered a six-figure salary from Edison – he had a
decision to make - what did he truly value, and which way
would he go? The rest of that story at the end of this
message...
